Well Known Ports and TCP Services

Port 20 & 21 FTP (File Transfer Protocol) used to move files from one computer to another over the internet. Port 20 is dedicated to data transfer and 21 is used for control. This protocol is commonly used to upload and download files to servers.

Port 23 Telnet is an application used to virtually connect in a client-server relationship, the user enters commands to the server. Telnet is also used in server console to virtual connect to other servers for maintenance and service.

Port 25 SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) This internet service is used by e-mail servers to communicate to other mail servers for transfer of e-mail, as well as to allow users to send e-mail to servers.

Port 53 (Domain Name Service) This is an internet application to translate IP address to URL and vise versa, because humans better understand URLs over IP . All networks will use a DNS service in order to resolve IP to URL issues, such as 64.233.169.147 to Google. DNS Servers also communicate to each other to resolve these issues.

Port 110 POP3 (Post Office Protocol Ver. 3) This application is used by clients to receive e-mail from mail servers. This is a very common service because the vast majority of corporations have domains for e-mail.
